SnapTrivia privacy policy
For parents, in plain words
- SnapTrivia makes a short trivia game about a photo you take or a topic you pick. Everyone in the room plays on one phone.
- Player names entered in the player list stay on this phone. The game sends only placeholders (Player 1, Player 2) with each player's age group, and puts the names back on your screen.
- To make the questions, the photo or topic is sent to our game service with those placeholders and age groups. An AI service writes the questions.
- New AI rounds are checked before play. To check a round, its questions and answers (with placeholders, never names) go to the AI service once more. To avoid repeats, the writer also receives up to 600 previous quiz answers saved on your phone, without player names.
- We keep a count of games for this phone under a random phone code. We hold the photo or topic only while your round is being written, and the finished questions only until your phone collects them (15 minutes at most); then they are deleted. Names never reach our service.
- To reduce repeat questions, SnapTrivia keeps a record of the questions already served to your phone (or, with a Family Pass (or an older Year Pass), to the phones on that pass): a fingerprint of up to 600 past questions, and for the most recent 60 the answer, the subject and the topic. It holds no player names and no photos. It is deleted after 12 months without play.
- If you report a question, we keep the question and answer with the player's name removed, the reason you chose and the round's code, for 90 days. We do not keep which phone sent it.
- If you send a challenge link, it carries only the round's topic and score (and how many questions it had), never a name, a photo or your phone; links end after 30 days.
- If you enable anonymous results, at the end of each game we keep how each question went (answered, stolen or missed) with the player's age group, under a scrambled code made from the phone code. No names, questions or answers.
- We keep cost records for each game: which AI model ran and how much text it processed. They contain no names, photos or questions.
- There are no ads and no advertising or analytics companies in SnapTrivia.
What we collect and why
Visits and invitation channels
- When
- Opening the game or family page, following its Play link, or starting a game from that invitation.
- Why
- To learn which invitations help people find and try SnapTrivia.
- Kept
- A daily count for a short channel label such as “parents” or “share,” and the step reached. These counts contain no phone code, name, full referring URL or advertising identifier, and are not linked to purchases. A channel label and duplicate-count flags stay in your browser session. Game-start reports respect the anonymous-results setting below.
Photo or topic
- When
- Starting a new round.
- Why
- To write questions about it.
- Kept
- Held by SnapTrivia only until the round starts being written (usually under a second), then deleted. It is sent to the AI service (Anthropic), which handles it under its own terms.
Player age groups (with placeholders, never names)
- When
- Starting a new round.
- Why
- To pitch each question to the right player.
- Kept
- Not stored by SnapTrivia. Sent to the AI service with the round.
The round's questions and answers (placeholders, never names)
- When
- Checking a round before play.
- Why
- To check the questions before anyone plays them.
- Kept
- The finished round waits on our service until your phone collects it, then it is deleted (15 minutes at most). Sent to the AI service for the check. We keep the check's result (how many questions passed and which failed, no text) and, for each question served, a one-way fingerprint so a round can be matched later; neither holds any wording.
Questions already served (so you never see one twice)
- When
- Every round served to your phone (or, with a Family Pass (or an older Year Pass), to the phones on that pass).
- Why
- To reduce repeat questions.
- Kept
- A fingerprint of up to 600 past questions, and for the most recent 60 the answer, the subject and the topic. No player names and no photos. Deleted after 12 months without play.
Random phone code
- When
- Every game request.
- Why
- To count free and paid games and to connect one round's requests.
- Kept
- The game count, the first and last day of use and the current round's status. It is deleted after 12 months without play, unless it holds a purchase that is still in use.
Game results
- When
- At the end of each finished game, and when someone taps to share the game.
- Why
- To learn which questions are too hard or too easy for each age group, and how often families pass the game on.
- Kept
- For each question: answered, stolen or missed, the age group, and whether the family argued it. For a share: only that it happened. Stored under a scrambled code made from the phone code, not the phone code itself. No names, questions or answers.
- Your choice
- "Send anonymous game results to help improve SnapTrivia", in the game setup. It is off on new profiles until you explicitly enable it. Kids lock keeps it off while the child is playing; when it is off, nothing about finished games or shares is sent.
Cost records
- When
- Every AI request.
- Why
- To understand what each game costs.
- Kept
- Model, amount of text processed and outcome. No names or content.
Question reports
- When
- When you report a question (on the web page or in the Android app).
- Why
- To fix wrong or unsuitable questions.
- Kept
- The question, answer, other accepted answers, choices and fun fact as they were shown (names removed), the reason and the round's code, for 90 days; then deleted automatically. No phone code.
Reading voice on the web
- When
- While a round is read aloud in the web game.
- Why
- To read questions in a clear voice.
- Kept
- Not stored by SnapTrivia. Lines without a player's name are sent through our service to Google's text-to-speech service, which handles them under its own terms. A line with a player's name is never sent: the phone's own voice reads it. The Android app uses the phone's own voice for every line.
Service logs
- When
- Every request.
- Why
- To keep the service running.
- Kept
- By our host (Netlify) for its log period. Our log lines hold counts, model use, round codes and error messages, never names or question text.
Except for question reports, the record of questions already served and the phone code's record, these records do not yet have an automatic deletion period. Until one is set and stated here, they are kept while the service runs, and you can ask us to delete the records for your phone (contact above).
Who handles data for us: Anthropic, PBC (the AI service), Netlify, Inc. (hosting and storage), Google (the web reading voice) and Stripe (web payments). Each handles data under its own terms.
Voice and microphone
- Android app: the microphone and the reading voice use your phone's own speech services. SnapTrivia never receives audio.
- Web game: answering by voice uses your browser's speech recognition. Depending on the browser, the browser maker may process the audio on its own servers (Chrome, for example, uses Google's service). SnapTrivia never receives audio.
On your phone
The app, or the browser's storage for this site, keeps:
- the random phone code;
- the player list (names and age groups) and settings;
- if you enable Kids lock, its child age, game settings and a salted PIN verifier, never the plain PIN. These are not sent anywhere. A different device needs its own setup; there is no online PIN recovery;
- recent answers, so questions don't repeat;
- the free-game count and, if you bought one, the Family Pass (or an older Year Pass) code and your web purchase access link for restoring it;
- an unfinished round so you can continue it, reports waiting to be sent, and the codes of your rounds from the last week so a question can still be reported;
- Android app only: your last round for replay, and the age group from the first-run question (the year you enter is not kept).
Clearing the app's data, uninstalling, or clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of this from the phone. It does not remove what our service keeps; ask us for that (contact above).
Children and families
SnapTrivia is a family game that children play with adults. On first use, the Android app asks for a birth year in a neutral way and keeps only whether the player is under 13. Without Kids lock, a grown-up opens the app camera. When a parent sets Kids lock, they authorize the child to choose topics and take photos at the fixed age band. Photos still go to the game service; the age setting does not remove private information from a photo. Purchases, sharing and settings require the parent PIN. Otherwise, and the only outside pages that open are this privacy policy and our support page; for players under 13, sharing copies the link and never opens another app. The web game asks no age and is meant to be played with a grown-up. We do not use advertising IDs or show ads.
Security
Requests between the game and our service use HTTPS. Each round has a signed code that only works for the phone it was made for.
Purchases
- Family Pass: A monthly Family Pass; cancel anytime. The price is shown before you buy. Free replay. Every topic is included. It works on up to three phones. To keep SnapTrivia fair for everyone, very heavy use, more than about sixty new rounds a month, may be slowed.
- A Year Pass bought earlier keeps what it was bought with, until its year ends.
- Payment is handled by Stripe. SnapTrivia never receives your card number. From Stripe we receive the checkout's code, whether it was paid, the amount, the payment's code and, for a Family Pass, the subscription's status and paid-through date and Stripe's customer code; we keep the pass record (its dates, the times of recent rounds for fair use, and up to three phone codes). Stripe keeps your payment details and receipt under its own terms. Manage your pass (on Home) opens Stripe's own billing page, where you can cancel, change your card or see your invoices.
- Android app: the Family Pass is sold through Google Play as a monthly subscription. Google handles payment; SnapTrivia never receives your card number. From Google we receive a purchase token, which our service verifies with Google, and the subscription's status and paid-through date; we keep the pass record (its dates, the times of recent rounds for fair use, and up to three phone codes). Manage or cancel it in Google Play under Subscriptions.
Changes
We will update this page and its date when what we collect changes.
